Collagen supplements are not all absorbed equally. The deciding factor is molecular weight — measured in Daltons (Da) — which determines whether a peptide can cross the intestinal wall and reach your tissues, or simply gets broken down into generic amino acids with no targeted effect.
Native collagen is useless as a supplement
In its natural form, collagen has a molecular weight of around 300,000 Da. Far too large to absorb. The body dismantles it into basic amino acids — no different from eating any other protein source.
Hydrolysis changes everything
Hydrolysis is the enzymatic process that cuts collagen into shorter peptide chains. The result: collagen peptides small enough to be absorbed intact. But the degree of hydrolysis matters enormously. High molecular weight peptides (>10,000 Da) still can’t cross the intestinal barrier efficiently. Low molecular weight peptides — around 2,000 Da — can.
What happens at 2,000 Da
At this size, peptides pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream as intact bioactive sequences — specifically Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly dipeptides. These have been detected in human plasma after oral ingestion and shown to directly stimulate fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen in skin, cartilage, and bone.
High molecular weight collagen doesn’t deliver these signals. It reaches the general amino acid pool and gets allocated by the body wherever it sees fit.
What to look for on a label
• Molecular weight ≤ 2,000 Da
• Branded ingredient with published clinical data
• Hydroxyproline content listed — a reliable marker of true collagen peptides
Molecular weight is not a detail. It is the mechanism. Without it, you are not supplementing collagen — you are buying expensive protein powder.
